Why a silhouette sign?

A Silhouette has immediate and lasting impact. You instantly capture the essence of the subject. There is no the burden of interior detail. Your imagination can take its time filling in the story line. Interpretations of the story's details may differ, but the IMPACT will always be immediate and enduring.

Together, we can design a silhouette that says, "This is who we are - what's important to us - what we like - what we want you to know about us." We can step beyond even this level of personalization by using your own photographs. The Sonle image was created using a standard size album photo. What is a silhouette?

A silhouette is the outline of an object, often filled in with a color contrasting with the background. The word "Silhouette" is derived from a French 18th Century bureaucrat, Etienne de Silhouette, who filled his idle time by cutting magnificent designs from paper.

Silhouettes were seen way back in Paleolithic cave drawings. Both the early Greeks and Chinese made extensive use of silhouettes. The process lent itself to the times as any lightsource, such as the sun, was all that was needed to cast the object's shadow directly on a wall, screen, etc. for the artist to trace or cutout.

In Western Civilization silhouette art reached it's pinnacle in the 17th and 18th century. It was used extensively to record the likeness of individuals in a much less expensive medium than commissioning a painting or sculpture. Of course, the development of modern photography ultimately displaced the silhouette as the most common art form.

Today, countless images bombard us at every turn so it's important to tell our story quickly, with dramatic impact. A silhouette does exactly that and is experiencing new popularity.
